The construction of neighbourhoods and its relevance for the measurement of social and ethnic segregation: evidence from Denmark
In this paper we propose a model for constructing neighbourhoods based on georeferenced data and administrative data. The 431,233 inhabited hectare cells in
Denmark are clustered into 9,404 small and 2,296 large neighbourhoods, inhabited on average in 2004 by 572 and 2,343 persons respectively. The priorities in the
clustering process are to obtain neighbourhoods that are unaltered over time, delineated by physical barriers, compact, homogeneous in terms of type of housing
and ownership, relatively small, homogeneous in terms of number of inhabitants, and comprised of a contiguous cluster of cells. To illustrate the importance of detailed neighbourhood information we compare social and ethnic segregation measured by Isolation and Dissimilation indices on the levels of municipalities and of small neighbourhoods. Our findings demonstrate substantial variation in the
residential mix in neighbourhoods within a given municipality, and thus show the importance of having information on a more detailed geographical level than that of the municipality
Foreground removal from WMAP 7yr polarization maps using an MLP neural network
One of the fundamental problems in extracting the cosmic microwave background
signal (CMB) from millimeter/submillimeter observations is the pollution by
emission from the Milky Way: synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust emission.
To extract the fundamental cosmological parameters from CMB signal, it is
mandatory to minimize this pollution since it will create systematic errors in
the CMB power spectra. In previous investigations, it has been demonstrated
that the neural network method provide high quality CMB maps from temperature
data. Here the analysis is extended to polarization maps. As a concrete
example, the WMAP 7-year polarization data, the most reliable determination of
the polarization properties of the CMB, has been analysed. The analysis has
adopted the frequency maps, noise models, window functions and the foreground
models as provided by the WMAP Team, and no auxiliary data is included. Within
this framework it is demonstrated that the network can extract the CMB
polarization signal with no sign of pollution by the polarized foregrounds. The
errors in the derived polarization power spectra are improved compared to the
errors derived by the WMAP Team.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
Relations between entanglement, Bell-inequality violation and teleportation fidelity for the two-qubit X states
Based on the assumption that the receiver Bob can apply any unitary
transformation, Horodecki {\it et al.} [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 222}, 21 (1996)]
proved that any mixed two spin-1/2 state which violates the Bell-CHSH
inequality is useful for teleportation. Here, we further show that any X state
which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality can also be used for nonclassical
teleportation even if Bob can only perform the identity or the Pauli rotation
operations. Moreover, we showed that the maximal difference between the two
average fidelities achievable via Bob's arbitrary transformations and via the
sole identity or the Pauli rotation is 1/9.Comment: 5 pages, to be published in "Quantum Information Processing
Plausibility functions and exact frequentist inference
In the frequentist program, inferential methods with exact control on error
rates are a primary focus. The standard approach, however, is to rely on
asymptotic approximations, which may not be suitable. This paper presents a
general framework for the construction of exact frequentist procedures based on
plausibility functions. It is shown that the plausibility function-based tests
and confidence regions have the desired frequentist properties in finite
samples---no large-sample justification needed. An extension of the proposed
method is also given for problems involving nuisance parameters. Examples
demonstrate that the plausibility function-based method is both exact and
efficient in a wide variety of problems.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
Generalised quantum weakest preconditions
Generalisation of the quantum weakest precondition result of D'Hondt and
Panangaden is presented. In particular the most general notion of quantum
predicate as positive operator valued measure (POVM) is introduced. The
previously known quantum weakest precondition result has been extended to cover
the case of POVM playing the role of a quantum predicate. Additionally, our
result is valid in infinite dimension case and also holds for a quantum
programs defined as a positive but not necessary completely positive
transformations of a quantum states.Comment: 7 pages, no figures, added references, changed conten
Aftershocks in Modern Perspectives: Complex Earthquake Network, Aging, and Non-Markovianity
The phenomenon of aftershocks is studied in view of science of complexity. In
particular, three different concepts are examined: (i) the complex-network
representation of seismicity, (ii) the event-event correlations, and (iii) the
effects of long-range memory. Regarding (i), it is shown the clustering
coefficient of the complex earthquake network exhibits a peculiar behavior at
and after main shocks. Regarding (ii), it is found that aftershocks experience
aging, and the associated scaling holds. And regarding (iii), the scaling
relation to be satisfied by a class of singular Markovian processes is
violated, implying the existence of the long-range memory in processes of
aftershocks.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures and 1 table. Acta Geophysica, in pres
